Arts & Crafts

My favorite subject in school was always art.  People told me I was good at it, and that encouraged me to keep creating, but I also just loved drawing.  Seeing what I could create gave me a sense of freedom and some hope for my future.  We do open-ended art here so little creators can use their own imagination and no two pieces of art are the same.  Occasionally there might be a coloring page just because children like to do those too, but we prefer original art!  We like to use different materials such as:  crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, and pieces of paper (for collages), and paint.  Sometimes we just use a lot of recyclables and stick them together with colorful duct tape to make whatever comes to mind!

Science

Science to us is all about exploring the world around each of us.  God created so many things for us to see, hear, smell and touch.  Children love to discover all sorts of amazing little treasures in the backyard, like cute little pill bugs under a piece of wood, a spider making an orb web, a baby bird in a nest, butterflies coming to some pretty flowers...  We even found a Walking Stick in our backyard!  The kids were afraid of it at first, but I picked it up and told them about how they put their front legs out in front of them and straighten their antennae and look like a stick.  Then everyone wanted to hold it!  Understanding things is the key to a life-long appreciation and concern.  Children that learn to love life and all the creatures God made, will also want to protect it.  Learning about nature is a huge part of what we do here!

Field Trips, Tv and Other Activities

When about 5 or less (walking) children are in attendance we can go on a field trip.  We go to one of the parks, the mall play area, the store, the library, the zoo, or to an advertized program somewhere.  TV is only on part of the day and is limited to educational programming, family-friendly movies or videos.  We don't want any couch sprouts!  Sometimes the older children in our care come up with an idea like putting together a music and motion routine or a puppet show.  We encourage all of the children to be creative and come up with ideas.  We have a huge variety of games and educational toys as well.
